RESUMO

Antarctic krill oil (AKO) is reddish-orange in color but undergoes changes during storage. To investigate the color deterioration and potential mechanisms involved, the changes in color, endogenous components (astaxanthin, fatty acids, and phospholipids), and reaction products (aldehydes, α-dicarbonyl compounds, and pyrroles) of AKO upon storage were determined. Although the visual color of AKO tended to darken upon storage, the colorimetric analysis and ultraviolet-visible spectrum analysis both indicated a fading in red and yellow due to the oxidative degradation of astaxanthin. During storage of AKO, lipid oxidation led to the formation of carbonyl compounds such as aldehydes and α-dicarbonyls. In addition, phosphatidylethanolamines (PEs) exhibited a faster loss rate than phosphatidylcholines. Moreover, hydrophobic pyrroles, the Maillard-like reaction products associated with primary amine groups in PEs accumulated. Therefore, it is suggested that the Maillard-like reaction between PEs and carbonyl compounds formed by lipid oxidation contributed to color darkening of AKO during storage.

RESUMO

Heavy metal(loid)s contamination prevails in the water-soil-plant system around non-ferrous metal mining areas. The present study aimed to evaluate the heavy metal(loid)s contamination in Nandan Pb-Zn mining area (Guangxi, China). A total of 36 river water samples, 75 paired paddy soil and rice samples, and 128 paired upland soil and plant samples were collected from this area. The concentrations of arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) in these samples were measured. Results showed that the average water quality indexes (WQIs) at the 12 sampling sites along the main river ranged from 41 to 5008, indicating the water qualities decreasing from "Excellent" to "Undrinkable". The WQIs nearby tailings or industrial park were significantly higher than those at the other sites. 34.0% and 64.5% of soil samples exceeded the risk screening values for As and Cd. The Pb and Cd concentrations in all rice samples exceeded the Chinese food safety limits by 18.7% and 82.7%, respectively. Leafy vegetables had a higher concentration of As, Pb, and Cd than other vegetables, exceeding the maximum permissible limits by 14.1%, 61.2%, and 40.0%, respectively. The biological accumulation coefficient (BAC) of Cd was the highest in rice and lettuce leaves. The hazard quotients (HQs) of As and Cd, indicating non-carcinogenic risks, were 4.15 and 1.76 in adult males, and 3.40 and 1.45 in adult females, all higher than the permitted level (1.0). The carcinogenic probabilities of As and Cd from rice and leafy vegetables consumption were all higher than 1 × 10-4. We conclude that metal(loid)s contamination of the water-soil-plant system has posed great non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks to the local population.

RESUMO

With the rapid economic and population growth, the Pearl River Delta(PRD) Region is one of the regions in China under the greatest pressure to be carbon neutral. This study analyzed the historical evolution characteristics of the carbon dioxide(CO2) emissions and sinks from 2006-2020 and identified the key drivers of the CO2 emissions and sinks based on the exponential decomposition method. The results showed that:① from 2006 to 2020, the total carbon emissions in the PRD Region increased from 218.22 million tons to 366.30 million tons, showing a fluctuating and rising evolution characteristic, with an overall increase of 67.86%. The carbon emission had not yet reached a peak. ② From 2006 to 2020, the total carbon sinks in the PRD Region decreased from 15.67 million tons to 15.53 million tons, showing a trend of fluctuation and decline, with an overall decrease of 0.94%. The carbon sinks were far lower than the carbon emissions, and there was still a large gap between carbon neutrality. ③ The main carbon emission sectors in the PRD Region were the energy sector(40.38%) and industrial sector(26.33%), and the carbon sinks mainly came from forestland(67.92%) and farmland(18.09%). ④ During the period from the "11th Five-Year Plan" to the "13th Five-Year Plan," the main positive driving factors for carbon emissions were economic growth and population size, whereas the main negative driving factor was energy intensity(energy use per unit GDP). However, since the "13th Five-Year Plan," the CO2 emission reduction potential released by reducing energy intensity has been weakening. In the future, the PRD Region needs to address the negative driving potential of the structural adjustment in energy, industry, transportation, and land use. ⑤ During the period from the "11th Five-Year Plan" to the "13th Five-Year Plan," the main positive driving factor for the carbon sink was the green scale, which was conducted by the increase in urban green space during the "11th Five-Year Plan." The main negative driving factor for the carbon sink was the carbon sink coefficient, which was caused by the natural disaster-induced yield reductions in crops with a high carbon sink coefficient, such as rice. Green space structure adjustment should be emphasized in the future. This study can provide scientific support for developing robust carbon-neutral policies in the PRD Region.

RESUMO

Introduction: Gut microbiota and metabolites have been identified to contribute to the pathogenesis of functional constipation (FC); however, the underlying mechanism(s) have not been elucidated, and the relationship between the gut microbiota and metabolites in FC has received limited attention in the literature. Methods: 16S rDNA sequencing and non-targeted metabolomic detection based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) technologies were combined to analyze the altered gut microbiome and metabolic profile of fecal samples from FC patients and healthy individuals (healthy control; HC). Results: The richness and diversity of gut microbiota significantly (p < 0.01) increased in FC patients. Compared to the HC group, 18 genera, including Intestinibacter, Klebsiella, and Akkermansia, exhibited statistically significant changes (p < 0.05). Metabolic analysis showed that metabolic profiles were also markedly altered with 79 metabolites, such as (-)-caryophyllene oxide, chenodeoxycholic acid, and biliverdin, indicating significant inter-group differences (p < 0.05). Besides, the primary bile acid biosynthesis, as well as the metabolic profile of porphyrin and chlorophyll, were the most dominant enriched pathways (FDR < 0.01), in which chenodeoxycholic acid and biliverdin were significantly enriched, respectively. Correlation analysis demonstrated a strong relationship between 10 genera and 19 metabolites (r > 0.6, FDR < 0.05), and notably, Intestinibacter showed a negative correlation with biliverdin (FDR < 0.001), which highlighted the interplay of the gut microbiota and metabolites in the pathogenesis of FC. Conclusion: Our research describes the characteristics of the gut microbiota and metabolic profiles and the correlation between the gut microbiota and metabolites in FC patients. This may contribute to the understanding of the underlying mechanisms involved in FC pathogenesis and may provide novel insights into therapeutic interventions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To observe the curative effect of fire needling pricking pericranial tender points combined with filiform needling on tension-type headache (TTH) and its effect on pericranial muscle tenderness, and explore the correlation between changes of headache symptoms and pericranial muscle tenderness in TTH, to analyze the influence of pericranial muscle tenderness on TTH. METHODS: A total of 41 TTH patients in the treatment group and 38 TTH patients in the control group completed the study. The patients in the treatment group were treated with fire needling at pericranial tender points combined with filiform needling at Baihui (GV20), Sishencong (EX-HN1), Shenting (GV24), Touwei (ST8) and Fengchi (GB20). The patients in the control group were only treated with the same filiform needling as the treatment group. Patients in the two groups were treated twice a week for 8 weeks. Before and after treatment, the days of headache onset, the number and distribution of pericranial muscle tender points were recorded, the degree of headache was evaluated by visual analogue scale and the threshold of pericranial muscle tender points were measured. The correlations between the changes of the days and degree of headache onset and the changes of the number and threshold of pericranial muscle tender points were analyzed. The effective rates in the two groups were calculated. RESULTS: Compared with those before treatment, the days of headache onset and the degree of headache were decreased (P<0.05) in the two groups;the number of pericranial muscle tender points was decreased (P<0.05) and the tenderness threshold was increased (P<0.05) in the treatment group. After treatment, compared with the control group, the days of headache onset, the degree of headache, and the number of pericranial muscle tender points were decreased (P<0.05), and the tenderness threshold was increased (P<0.05) in the treatment group. The decrease of the days and degree of headache was positively correlated with the decrease of number and the increase of tenderness threshold of pericranial muscle tender points (P<0.05). The effective rate in the treatment group was 87.80% (36/41), which was higher than 57.89% (22/38) in the control group (P<0.05). The most common anatomic location of tender points in baseline was superior trapezius muscle, followed by sternocleidomastoid muscle, superior nuchal line, temporal muscle, masseter muscle, etc. CONCLUSIONS: The fire needling at the pericranial muscle tender points combined with filiform needling on TTH patients can significantly improve the clinical symptoms and reduce the pericranial muscle tenderness. The pericranial muscle tenderness is an important factor in the pathogenesis of TTH.

RESUMO

Atmospheric formaldehyde, a key precursor for ozone (O3) and secondary PM2.5, is carcinogenic and plays an important role in atmospheric photochemistry and the formation of secondary pollution. However, the lack of understanding of the emission sources of atmospheric formaldehyde limits the study on the formation mechanism of secondary pollution and the formulation of pollution control strategies. This study used the emission factor and source profile methods to establish the emission inventories of formaldehyde in Guangdong Province from 2006 to 2020 and identified the main emission sources of formaldehyde and spatial and temporal evolution characteristics. The results showed that the formaldehyde emissions in Guangdong Province fluctuated in the range of 39000-56000 tons during 2006 to 2020, exhibiting a very weak downward trend. Biomass combustion is an important source of formaldehyde emission in Guangdong Province, of which the contribution decreased from 58% in 2006 to 27% in 2020 owing to effective control measures implemented in Guangdong Province. The solvent use source became the predominant emission source of formaldehyde in 2020 by contributing up to 28%, primarily through plastic products and asphalt paving sources. The construction machinery and trucks fueled by diesel were important contributors of formaldehyde emissions from mobile sources. Although the formaldehyde emissions in the Pearl River Delta and the non-Pearl River Delta were equivalent, the spatial distributions showed that formaldehyde emission hotspots were concentrated in the center of the Pearl River Delta and the eastern and western areas of the non-Pearl River Delta. This was primarily because the solvent use and mobile sources were the main sources of formaldehyde emissions in the Pearl River Delta, whereas the biomass combustion source was the dominant source in the non-Pearl River Delta. Therefore, the formaldehyde emission mitigations of the industrial and mobile sources in the central region of the Pearl River Delta and the biomass combustion source in the western area of Guangdong should be further strengthened in the future.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In recent years, Salvia miltiorrhiza and its active substances have remarkably progressed in treating central neurological disorders. Tanshinone IIA (TSA) is an active ingredient derived from the rhizome of Salvia miltiorrhiza that has been found to alleviate the symptoms of several psychiatric illnesses. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental disorder that results after experiencing a serious physical or psychological injury. The currently used drugs are not satisfactory for the treatment of PTSD. However, it has been reported that TSA can improve PTSD-like symptoms like learning and memory, cognitive disorder, and depression through multi-target regulation. PURPOSE: This paper discusses the ameliorative effects of TSA on PTSD-like symptoms and the possible mechanisms of action in terms of inhibition of neuronal apoptosis, anti-neuroinflammation, and anti-oxidative stress. Based on the pathological changes and clinical observations of PTSD, we hope to provide some reference for the clinical transformation of Chinese medicine in treating PTSD. METHODS: A large number of literatures on tanshinone in the treatment of neurological diseases and PTSD were retrieved from online electronic PubMed and Web of Science databases. CONCLUSION: TSA is a widely studied natural active ingredient against mental illness. This review will contribute to the future development of TSA as a new clinical candidate drug for improving PTSD-like symptoms.

RESUMO

Based on the development of conditions, the etiology and pathogenesis of jingjin (muscle region of meridian) diseases are summarized as 3 stages, i.e. stagnation due to over-exertion at early stage, manifested by tendon-muscle contracture and tenderness; cold condition due to stagnation, interaction of stasis and cold, resulting in clustered nodules at the middle stage; prolonged illness and missed/delayed treatment, leading to tendon-muscle contracture and impairment of joint function at the late stage. It is proposed that the treatment of jingjin diseases should be combined with the characteristic advantages of fire needling and bloodletting technique, on the base of "eliminating stagnation and bloodletting/fire needling". This combined therapy warming yang to resolve stasis and dispels cold to remove nodules, in which, eliminating the stagnation is conductive to the tissue regeneration, and the staging treatment is delivered in terms of the condition development at different phases.

RESUMO

Mitochondria are a crucial energy source for maintaining neuronal growth and synaptic function. Neurons possess unique morphological characteristics, which make the proper regulation of mitochondrial transport essential for meeting their energy demands. Syntaphilin (SNPH) is capable of specifically targeting the outer membrane of axonal mitochondria, anchoring them to microtubules, and thereby preventing their transport. SNPH also interacts with other mitochondrial proteins to regulate mitochondrial transport. The regulation of mitochondrial transport and anchoring mediated by SNPH is indispensable for axonal growth during neuronal development, maintenance of ATP levels during neuronal synaptic activity, and regeneration of mature neurons following damage. Precise blocking of SNPH may be an effective therapeutic strategy for neurodegenerative diseases and related mental disorders.

RESUMO

Alternative pre-mRNA splicing, which produces various mRNA isoforms with distinct structures and functions from a single gene, is regulated by specific RNA-binding proteins and is an essential method for regulating gene expression in mammals. Recent studies have shown that abnormal change during neuronal development triggered by splicing mis-regulation is an important feature of various neurological diseases. Polypyrimidine tract binding protein 1 (PTBP1) is a kind of RNA-binding proteins with extensive biological functions. As a well-known splicing regulator, it affects the neuronal development process through its involvement in axon formation, synaptogenesis, and neuronal apoptosis, according to the most recent studies. Here, we summarized the mechanism of alternative splicing, structure and function of PTBP1, and the latest research progress on the role of alternative splicing events regulated by PTBP1 in axon formation, synaptogenesis and neuronal apoptosis, to reveal the mechanism of PTBP1-regulated changes in neuronal development process.

RESUMO

A method for the C(sp3)-H alkenylation of N-aryl-tetrahydroisoquinoline (THIQ) has been developed by the combination of electrooxidation and a copper catalyst. The corresponding products were obtained with good to excellent yields under mild conditions. Besides, the addition of TEMPO as an electron mediator is crucial to this transformation, since the oxidative reaction could proceed under a low electrode potential. In addition, the catalytic asymmetric variant has also been demonstrated with good enantioselectivity.

RESUMO

Background: This study aimed to explore the prevalence of elder neglect (EN) and its associated factors among community-based Chinese older adults. Methods: We used data from the 2018 phase of a nationwide cross-sectional study, the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), which recruited 15,854 older adults to complete the study interviews that incorporated six dimensions of EN, namely, life neglect, social isolation, medical neglect, poor living situation, family neglect, and social neglect. Multivariate logistic regression was used to explore factors associated with EN. Results: We included demographic factors, chronic diseases, cognitive function, and daily activity function in our comprehensive analysis and showed that they had different effects on the six EN dimensions. Different demographic factors such as gender, age, marriage, education, occupation, residence, and household income were included in the comprehensive analysis, and the results showed that these factors had different effects on the six dimensions of EN. Next, we found that older adults with chronic diseases are prone to life neglect, medical neglect, and residential environment neglect. Older adults with better cognitive abilities were less likely to be neglected, and a decline in daily activity capacity has been linked to EN in older adults. Conclusion: Future studies are needed to identify the health effects of these associated factors, develop prevention strategies for EN, and improve the quality of life of older adults living in communities.

RESUMO

C(sp3)-H alkenylation of tetrahydroisoquinoline by merging Shono oxidation and the Morita-Baylis-Hillman reaction is developed, employing 4-dimethylaminopyridine as an organocatalyst and TEMPO/NaBr as an electrocatalyst. The reaction proceeds via the interception of an iminium cation intermediate, which is generated in situ from anodic oxidation, leading to aza-Morita-Baylis-Hillman reaction products. Additionally, the use of TEMPO and NaBr as mediators is crucial to avoid the decomposition of products by lowering the oxidation potential of the reaction.

RESUMO

Liucheng county, as a suburb of Liuzhou City in Guangxi province, has a prominent ozone (O3) pollution problem; however, there have been no relevant analyses of the cause of local O3 pollution reported. In order to investigate the causes of O3 pollution, an online observation of 116 VOCs with a time resolution of 1 h was carried out in Liucheng county from October 1st to 15th, and the sensitivity of ozone to the relative changes in the NOx and VOCs was analyzed. The results showed that the average value of φï¼»total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs)ï¼½ during the observation period was 27.52×10-9, and the average value of φ(TVOCs) during the polluting process (October 1st to 6th) was 32.15×10-9, which was 32.79% higher than that of the non-pollution process (October 8th to 15th). In terms of species concentration, oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) contributed the highest, accounting for 43.70%, followed by alkanes (23.00%), aromatics (11.75%), and halocarbons (7.35%). In terms of ozone formation potential (OFP), OVOCs contributed the highest (41.96%) to OFP, followed by aromatics (32.60%) and alkenes (17.92%). During the observation period, VOCs mainly came from motor vehicle emissions (32.44%), biomass combustion sources (29.31%), solvent use sources (16.43%), plant sources (11.34%), and chemical industry emissions (10.49%). The contribution ratios of solvent use sources and plant sources in the pollution process increased by 28.58% and 28.53%, respectively. The EKMA curve shows that, during the observation period, Liucheng county was in a synergistic control area for VOCs and nitric oxide (NOx). Therefore, in the high ozone-occurrence autumn of Liucheng county, the key will be to reduce both VOCs and NOx emissions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of fire needling on prostate symptoms, quality of life, average daily number of nightly urination, urine flow rate and prostat volume in patients with mild to moderate benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) of kidney yang deficiency. METHODS: A total of 60 patients with mild to moderate BPH of kidney yang deficiency were randomly divided into an observation group (30 cases, 3 cases dropped off) and a control group (30 cases, 4 cases dropped off). The observation group was treated with fire needling at Guanyuan (CV 4), Shuidao (ST 28) and Qugu (CV 2) twice a week (2-3 d interval between each treatment), continuous treatment for 4 weeks. The control group received lifestyle advice and education, once a week for 4 weeks. In the two groups, the international prostate symptom score (IPSS), the quality of life (QoL) score and the average daily number of nightly urination were observed before treatment, after treatment and during the follow-up of the 4th week; the urinary maximum flow rate (Qmax), the average flow rate (Qave), and the prostate volume were assessed before and after treatment in the two groups. The safety was observed in the observation group. RESULTS: After treatment and during follow-up, the IPSS scores, QoL scores, and the average daily number of nightly urination in the observation group were decreased compared with those before treatment (P<0.05), and those in the observation group were lower than the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, there was no significant difference in Qmax, Qave and prostate volume between the two groups and within the each group (P>0.05). There were no fire needling-related adverse reactions, and no obvious abnormality was found in urine routine and coagulation function tests before and after treatment in the observation group. CONCLUSION: Fire needling can improve lower urinary tract symptoms and quality of life, reduce frequency of nightly urination in patients with mild to moderate BPH of kidney yang deficiency, and has good safety.

RESUMO

The appropriate needle device is crucial for obtaining the curative effect of fire needling therapy. The article introduces the material specification, clinical operation, indications, characteristics and advantages of the contemporary traditional fire needling devices (e.g. He's fire needle and Shi 's fire needle) and the contemporary new-type ones (e.g. fire needling with filiform needle and micro-needle); and determines the innovations of modern fire needling. It is anticipated that the needle specifications, production process and operation standard of fire needling devices should be further unified so as to provide the references for the selection of fire needling devices in treatment based on clinical syndrome differentiation and expand the clinical application of fire needling therapy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Painful paronychia and pseudopyogenic granuloma (PG) are common adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with the use of epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Multiple local management approaches have been tested with unsatisfactory results. We have introduced an occlusion therapy technique through which available topical drugs for longer than 2 years. METHODS: Based on the cancer registry and case management system of our hospital, from July 2019 to July 2020, we retrospectively enrolled patients with NSCLC who were treated with EGFR-TKIs and received applications of 0.5% timolol ophthalmic solution (TIMOPTOL XE 0.5%®) combined with a neomycin/tyrothricin ointment (Biomycin®) using the occlusion method to treat paronychia or PG. RESULTS: A total of 22 patients were enrolled, with a mean age of 66.5 years, most of whom were women (72.7%). Periungual lesion-related pain was reported by all patients, and periungual bleeding and PG were reported in 14% (3/22) and 64% (14/22) of patients, respectively. After the occlusion therapy application of timolol ophthalmic solution combined with neomycin/tyrothricin ointment twice daily, the overall response rate was 83.3%, including complete response in 18% (4/22) of cases and partial response in 68% (15/22) of cases. CONCLUSION: We presented an occlusion method using available topical beta-blockers and antibiotic ointment for EGFR-TKI-induced paronychia and PG in Taiwan. The result is favorable. Further randomized control trial is urgent to validate our findings.

RESUMO

Central nervous system injury diseases can cause the loss of many neurons, and it is difficult to regenerate. The field of regenerative medicine believes that supplementing the missing neurons may be an ideal method for nerve injury repair. Recent studies have found that down-regulation of polypyrimidine tract binding protein 1 (PTBP1) expression can make glial cells transdifferentiate into different types of neurons, which is expected to be an alternative therapy to restore neuronal function. This article summarized the research progress on the structure and biological function of the PTBP family, the mutual regulation of PTBP1 and PTBP2, their role in neurogenesis, and the latest research progress in targeting PTBP1 to mediate the transdifferentiation of glial cells into neurons, which may provide some new strategies and new ideas for the future treatment of central nervous system injury and neurodegenerative diseases. This article is categorized under: RNA Processing > Splicing Regulation/Alternative Splicing.

Abscisic acid (ABA), a conserved hormone existing in plants and animals, not only regulates blood glucose and inflammation but also has good therapeutic effects on obesity, diabetes, atherosclerosis and inflammatory diseases in animals. Studies have shown that exogenous ABA can pass the blood-brain barrier and inhibit neuroinflammation, promote neurogenesis, enhance synaptic plasticity, improve learning, memory and cognitive ability in the central nervous system. At the same time, ABA plays a crucial role in significant improvement of Alzheimer's disease, depression, and anxiety. Here we review the previous research progress of ABA on the physiological effects and clinical application in the related diseases. By summarizing the biological functions of ABA, we aim to reveal the possible mechanisms of ameliorative function of ABA on learning and memory, to provide a theoretical basis that ABA as a novel and safe drug improves learning memory and cognitive impairment in central system diseases such as aging, neurodegenerative diseases and traumatic brain injury.

RESUMO

Physicians in the past dynasties have improved the theory of fire needling from the aspects of fire needling instruments, clinical efficacy, application scope, operation, precautions, etc., which promoted the clinical application of fire needling. Modern fire needling breaks through the traditional clinical taboos such as heat syndrome, face, forbidden acupoints, and no needle retention. By using modern fire needling with various types, characteristics and functions, multiple needles and multiple methods are used to treat various diseases, which can further exert the therapeutic effect of fire needling and promote the popularization and application of fire needle therapy.
